Gites in Sigournais
Family friendly holiday homes in the Vendée
About Sigournais in the Vendée
Our holiday homes are located less than a 5 minute drive from Sigournais - with its general store, hairdresser and bar/restaurant. The holiday homes are in a hamlet nestling in the glorious countryside of the Vendee and they date from the seventeenth century. Many of the original occupants of our holiday homes, and lots of other hamlet dwellers worked at the famous château de Sigournais.
This peaceful setting is the perfect place to unwind; there is virtually no traffic apart from the occasional tractor! It is particularly tranquil. There are working farms close by and it is not unusual to see cows grazing in the fields around Sigournais. Over the field beyond the patio of the barn you can see the château and its original driveway through an avenue of trees.
The Château in Sigournais was remodelled in the 15th century on the foundations of a castle built around the year 1000, it has ditches, an enclosure, towers, and a covered walkway - one of the best examples of military architecture of the Middle Ages in the Vendée. In the seigneurial dwelling, you can discover a unique collection of 800 territorial coats of arms: provinces of the old regime, French departments and their chief towns, municipalities of Vendée, provinces and capitals of all Europe.
Chantonnay, a larger town and only 10 minutes drive away, has many shops - including three large supermarkets. The town has a general market on Thursdays and a food market on Saturdays. There is also a cinema and a swimming pool, plus numerous restaurants and bars.
La Morliere Restaurant
The Lac du Rochereau, is only a 5 minute drive from our holiday homes, and is probably one of the most beautiful spots you have ever seen. You can swim from its beach, hire a boat for the afternoon, have a picnic on the banks, admire & paint the views, or try fishing for carp and sander. The Morliere Restaurant sits on the top off a hill overlooking this lake and only 5 minutes away - a perfect place for a lunchtime break.
For a more energetic day out: We have riding stables nearby, horse racing, surfing at the beach, water sports on the lake and at the coast, cycling trails, running tracks, golf courses and even night clubs for the young (at heart!)! You can also try hot air ballooning, bird watching, walking trails through the forests, canoeing, visits to historic castles and villages, local markets, the Natur'Zoo in Mervent.
We have lots of tourist information leafets in our holiday homes, so you'll be able to plan your days out!
